salton sea exploration round 1

This past weekend my friend Layne and I drove down interstate 8 to El Centro and then cut north another hour to the southeastern shore of American’s largest environmental disaster area known as the Salton Sea. For those of you unfamiliar with the sea, it was once a mecca for sports fishing, boating and general recreation and was surrounded by resorts from its heyday of the 1950s until the great flood of 1981. Since then the sea is nothing more then an area surrounded by ghost towns, trailer parks and millions of dead fish and birds lining the shores. The smell here is unbearable. The mixture of death and despair can overcome your senses and make you ill at anytime. No more water runs in or out of the sea and the salt levels are at an all time high. This is truly an amazing place to visit because the fact that it exists is completely mind blowing. I have been here several times in the past to skate the infinite amount of abandoned swimming pools surrounding the sea. This is our first trip to document the area, with Layne shooting the photographs.

Ground Control Featherlite Pro Frames

The Featherlite name is keeping its promise: A 22% weight reduction
compared to traditional GC frames – yet stronger than ever. This
revolutionary design is the brainchild of Stefan “Horn” Horngacher, one
of Europe’s most progressive and innovative skaters. His idea was to
make a solid one piece frame, increase the wall thickness in the
grinding area but significantly reduce it in the upper area where it
will never touch the ground.
The result is a frame which is extremely durable, stiff, light weight
and provides maximum strength. The FLT frame also incorporates GC’s
signature symmetrical design, a perfect center groove and a low profile.
The Featherlite frames comes as Pro frames for Chris Haffey (black),
Brian Shima (white) and Horn (dark grey).
